Method:
In the first phase, we explore the reasons for applying and the request for help. We do this by using the context and life story, with attention for the intergenerational aspect. By using language or play, we try to understand the meaning of symptoms/complaints. In doing so, we integrate reason, emotion and body experience.
Parents and carers are welcome to join us in reflecting on the reason for suffering. We then discuss ways of making things better for the child, adolescent and/or family. From my training as a psychologist, I think along with you, based on my knowledge of the (psychological) development of a child and their world of experience.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing EMDR is a psychotherapeutic technique that is used when our natural processing system is stuck: we cannot get certain thoughts or images out of our heads, feelings remain intense and overwhelm us, and/or there are physical complaints (fatigue, muscle tension, headaches,…). Before EMDR can be started, the living situation must be safe and sufficiently stable. Additional stabilisation techniques can be taught before processing is started. It is important that the client feels sufficiently comfortable with the therapist to be able to talk about what has happened to him/her. Therefore, processing is never done during a first appointment. The number of sessions required depends on the nature of the trauma, the client’s temporality and his/her coping process. In the case of single or one-off trauma, fewer sessions are often required than for complex trauma or long-term and repeated trauma.
